Scholarships in China

Chinese Government Scholarship applications are almost always submitted twice: once to the dispatching authority that nominates you, and once to the university that admits you. Applicants who complete only one half of that process are rejected on process grounds rather than merit.

Funding

What the funding actually covers

Full Chinese Government Scholarships cover tuition, on-campus accommodation or a housing allowance, a monthly living stipend and comprehensive medical insurance. Partial awards cover any subset of those, most commonly tuition alone. Confucius Institute scholarships additionally fund language study.

Eligibility

Eligibility patterns to check first

  • Applications go through a dispatching authority: an embassy, a partner university or a designated institution.
  • Age limits apply by level, commonly under 25 for undergraduate and under 35 for master's study.
  • Applicants must generally not already hold a Chinese government scholarship.
  • A physical examination record is required and has a limited validity period.
  • Chinese-taught programmes normally require an HSK certificate at a stated level.
Deadlines

How the deadlines work

Most Chinese Government Scholarship deadlines fall between January and April for September entry, with the dispatching authority's deadline earlier than the university's. Confucius Institute deadlines are more evenly spread through the year.

Applying

Application advice for this search

  1. Identify your dispatching authority before starting, as it determines your agency number and deadline.

  2. Submit to both the CSC system and the university system where both are required.

  3. Complete the medical examination early, since its validity period is limited.

  4. Confirm whether your programme is taught in Chinese or English before assuming a language requirement.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What is a dispatching authority?

It is the body authorised to nominate you for a Chinese Government Scholarship: usually the Chinese embassy in your country, your home university under a partnership, or a designated institution. Your application is only valid through one of them.

Do I need HSK for a Chinese scholarship?

Only for Chinese-taught programmes, where a specific HSK level is normally stated. English-taught programmes require English evidence instead, and language-study scholarships exist specifically to help you reach the required HSK level.
